Chuck E. Cheese Tokens

Chuck E. Cheese tokens are metal arcade tokens issued by Chuck E. Cheese's restaurants from 1977 until the chain's transition to play pass cards around 2018. Hundreds of varieties exist, distinguished by design, location indicators, metal composition, size, and mint mark, spanning multiple corporate eras and international markets.

The tokens have been sold on eBay since its inception. Originally being purchased to use in store, then by people with home arcades and slot machines, and now by nostalgia chasing collectors. You can buy them in bulk and hunt for rare tokens (some purchase lots of thousands at a time hunting for $100 grail tokens) or browse for individual tokens you need to fill your collection. The cataloging and tracking website, cectoken.com, makes it easy to keep tabs on what you need.

The tokens are organized into 5 main types with a few sub-types based on the era they were issued in Rat Heads (Type 1a; 1977–1982), City Tokens (Type 1b; 1978–1983), Tux Chucks (Type 2; 1983–1990), “Kid Can Be a Kid” Tux Chucks (Type 3; 1990–2006), Avenger Chucks (Type 4; 1995–2000), and Rockstar Chucks (Type 5; 2013–2025). They are commonly brass but have variants in Copper, Nickel, and a few other finishes.

The cost of entry is low. Common varieties circulate widely in bulk lots, coin-shop bins, and online listings, typically for well under a dollar each, and a representative collection covering the major eras can be assembled inexpensively. Sorting bulk lots by variety is the standard starting point.

The main grail token is the 1979 Santa Anna token. This token was created as a test batch ahead of the opening of a new location. A misspelling of the city name led them to be returned to the mint (aside from 30 pocketed by an employee). Before they could be produced with the proper spelling, the opening of the Santa Ana location was called off. Only 8 of the rumored 30 in existence have been discovered.

Some others to call out are the original 1977 token as well as the foreign tokens from Australia and Saudi Arabia. All of these have sold for prices in the hundreds.
